GALLERY OF FRANK R. PAUL's SCIENCE FICTION ARTWORK

Cover art by Frank R. Paul for April 1940 Fantastic Adventures magazine.
"Paul's approach to painting was predicated on the inferiority of the paper used in pulp magazines and on the crude reproduction methods available at the time. The artist used highly saturated primary colors in large, flat areas and employed a minimum of modeling, relying instead on heavy outlining to define form. The end result was an appealing posterization of the image with bright, strong colors that would carry beyond the riot of palettes and subjects that were then common on the magazine racks. Given the novelty of science fiction at that time, it is little wonder that Paul's artwork was so fondly embraced by SF fans, nor is there any doubt of its importance in attracting readers to this new and unusual kind of literature."
