GALLERY OF FRANK R. PAUL's SCIENCE FICTION ARTWORK

artwork (c) Frank R. Paul estate

Cover art by Frank R. Paul for June 1934 Wonder Stories.

This painting still exists, and is in a private collection.  He wrote to me that he obtained it around "1952-53 when Sam Moskowitz was managing editor of Science Fiction Plus and Paul was doing covers for the magazine."  He also noted that, "I obtained this item at an auction held at a meeting of The Eastern Science Fiction Association (Newark, NJ) in the 1950's at which Frank Paul was the guest speaker. He gave the painting to the club to be auctioned off to the members. I was fortunate to acquire the painting and have it autographed.  I note that the cover image you have in the illustrated list of Paul's work is not very distinct.  I plan to have the painting digitilized for archiving.  I will be pleased to send you a copy of the file.  Since I framed the painting under glass (it has been stored for the last 30 years), it is still in very good shape."

Here is a detail from the painting:

Also, Paul autographed it separately, apparently in pencil, a rare occurrence.  Here is his signature, digitally enhanced for contrast:
