GALLERY OF FRANK R. PAUL's SCIENCE FICTION ARTWORK

artwork (c) Frank R. Paul estate

Cover art by Frank R. Paul for February 1929 Amazing Stories.

Really wonderful work.  Paul uses every visual trick at his disposal to differentiate between the combatants in this piece.  He uses size, color (red v. earth tones), texture (smooth plates v. bumpy skin), zoological anatomy (insect-like v. reptilian), personality (frenetic v. majestic), and even technology (the insects have ray guns but the rex doesn't).  The insects are gesticulating like wild monkeys; the T. rex seems nothing more than annoyed by their presence.  That's quite a contrast for two types of creatures on a single magazine cover. - F.W.
