GALLERY OF FRANK R. PAUL's SCIENCE FICTION ARTWORK

artwork (c) Frank R. Paul estate

Art by Frank R. Paul for March 1939, Science Fiction magazine.

This was the premiere issue of Science Fiction magazine, which lasted only 12 issues - and yet managed to collect three different publishers and two different editors.  The Encyclopedia of Science Fiction had this to say about this mag: "The second venture into magazine editing by former Wonder Stories editor [Charles D.] Hornig, SF was never better than very mediocre; although its covers were all by Frank R. Paul, they were poor examples of his work."  Malcolm J. Edwards/Peter Nicholls, in The Encyclopedia of Science Fiction, ed. John Clute and Peter Nicholls, 1993, St. Martin's Press, N.Y., p. 1062.

Poor examples?  I don't know.  They're still pretty fun - and a less-than-spectacular Paul is better than no Paul at all.
